since Independence in 1961.
We are very pleased to mark a milestone in the history of our guiding services to visitors: the competition is running in its 8th year. And for millions of visitors to our country, that first impression is shaped by their tour guide.
Most importantly, visitors leave with a better understanding of the Tanzanian culture, its values and the many diverse attractions of unforgettable Tanzania.
For decades, our multilingual tour guides have been the face and voice of the United Republic of Tanzania to over 2 million visitors from around the world. Our guides play a pivotal role in providing timely and accurate information about the priorities and activities of the country tourism.
Tour guides are our ambassadors to the public. They inspire, educate, and engage people from every corner of the world and all walks of life. Covering history, wildlife, culture, art, diplomacy — as they share the story of what the country has to offer and why it matters.
To our guides, past, present and future: We are ambassadors, serving with pride and passion.
What is The Tour Guide Awards Foundation?
Tanzania Tour Guide Awards Foundation (TTGAF) is a registered not for profit NGO in the United Republic of Tanzania with Registration Number 00NGO/R/1084. It is a foundation dedicated to celebrating the many talented tour guides that create the best experience during our visitors’ holidays, as well as being a family of peers, like-minded individuals that share hospitality competence. A common space, where the old guard shares the core of the craft with the next generation, who in return inspires new ways of thinking.
Who created The Tanzania Tour Guide Awards?
Tanzanian Naturalists & Former Chair Person of National Guide Association Sadock Mugetta and his colleague Safari Guide Nixon Massawe, created TTGAF in 2016. Later they were joined by other
tourism and hospitality champions, Ally Mtemvu, Moses Njole, Dr Christopher Nzella, Vedasto Izob, Salehe Seif and Alex John.
Why The Best Tour Guide?
The Best Tour Guide’s goal is to nationally unite the best tour guide and leaders in the world of tourism and hospitality and highlight their process. Not only to their peers, but to everyone; future generations, who can learn and build on their footsteps, industry partners and the public at large.
When was the Best Tour Guide Awards created?
In 2016, The Tanzania Tour Guide Awards Foundation expanded its offering by creating the The Best Tour Guide Awards: a ranking list focused on Tour Guides. The awards were initially held in Arusha in
2016, in Dar es Salaam in 2017 & 2018, Arusha in 2019 and in 2020 virtually over three days due to the global pandemic.
What sets The Best Tour Guide Awards apart from other tourism recognition?
The Best Tour Guide Awards puts an important group first: THE TOUR GUIDES. Tourism awards often focus on tour operators or accommodation providers. The Best Tour Guide tries to shift that, highlighting the tour guides, his or her approach to hospitality, what makes the difference to the extraordinary guide and aims to shift the narrative of guides as the main key component of the tourism triangle, which are always overlooked.
Our Judges
Are expected to provide professional and qualified services and act in an independent capacity to fill the judging toolkit and the final mark will be compiled in order to get the winner for each male and female category. The winning guide will be the one with the highest overall marks. Find the details for the Best Tour Guide Awards process.
